Ayala Ben-David created expressive, vibrant works of art inspired by her life on a kibbutz in the Negev desert in the South of Israel. Her work often plays with contrast and symbolism, texture and realism. The Shooting Stars ketubah is a striking example of Ben-David’s love of expressive brushwork and dynamic color. Layers of pink and ochre transition to a sky of cobalt blue and purple, displaying shooting stars and a glowing moon. The text itself is crowned by an arch accented by the phrase, “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li," “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine" in English and Hebrew. A rainbow-patterned ribbon adds the finishing touch to this beautiful design, symbolizing tolerance, diversity, and perhaps even hinting to Joseph’s coat of many colors.
