This hand-crafted, lidded box makes a stunning centerpiece, inspired by and created with the landscape of Israel. A great deal of devotion and artistry go into each piece: ceramicist Shamai Sam Gibsh has to fire each piece multiple times to accommodate the variety in firing points of the different clays he collects. The richly-colored clays are collected from across Israel and around the world. No colors are added to the clay — these are their natural colors. Textures and patterns are often made with pine needles and other elements from Israel’s landscape.
Gibsh created this piece using terra sigillata, a contemporary studio pottery technique inspired by the tradition of ancient potters in Greece prior to the use of glaze. Roughly translated as ‘sealed earth,’ the popular meaning is ‘clay bearing little images.’ The variety of clays and the firing process result in extraordinary landscape and smoky effects. Gibsh is a renowned Israeli ceramicist whose work is exhibited and sold internationally, including in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. He creates his pieces in his studio in Jaffa, Israel.
Each museum-quality piece is one-of-a-kind. If the specific item pictured has sold, we will contact you with the image of a close replacement.
