Centering Liberation: a Guide for a Social Justice Seder

Centering Liberation: a Guide for a Social Justice Seder

April 16, 2019 1 Comment

The phrase “social justice” tends to awaken strong feelings in people because it evokes core beliefs, values and experiences. Justice, and the search for it, has always been inherently political; it's a struggle between the “haves and the have-nots,” and a conversation about where power lies and why.

Our Big Basement Seder

Our Big Basement Seder

April 09, 2019

My father and his brothers grew up in a barn, literally. Their parents, my Bubby and Zeda, paid the local handyman/architect in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, to transform the giant structure into a home where the Solomons could “spread out and be comfortable.”

Food-For-All: a Guide for a Vegetarian Seder

April 07, 2019

Planning and preparing the food for a gathering can be one of the sweetest joys—and one of the greatest stressors. As hosts, we want to make sure our guests delight in the foods we prepare for them, while also being sensitive to any dietary restrictions.

One Seder, a Million Ways to Be: a Guide for a Multi-Faith Seder

One Seder, a Million Ways to Be: a Guide for a Multi-Faith Seder

April 02, 2019

Growing up in a Jewish home, my family’s year was colored with the brightness of the different Jewish holidays. Among my favorites has always been Passover; my parents and brother and I would pile into the family car and make the drive to New York to spend the Seders with my grandparents and cousins.

Growing Together: The Search for Jewish Community

Growing Together: The Search for Jewish Community

March 28, 2019 1 Comment

I am, to my knowledge, the only Jew in my family. Growing up in a very small, very Christian town in Michigan, I didn’t meet a Jewish person until I moved to Boston for college; and my experiences of finding Jewish community have, and continue to be, informed by identity as a gay, nonbinary, white Jew-by-choice.

Poetry as a Journey: A Guide for a Poetry-Themed Seder

Poetry as a Journey: A Guide for a Poetry-Themed Seder

March 17, 2019

A Seder is not a single night or meal; it is a journey starting the moment you put your pen to a page to plan the songs you will sing, the passages you will read, and the dishes you will serve. As this journey of planning and writing begins, you are invited to stop, breathe deeply, and gaze onto the trail before you.

The Power of Chutzpah

The Power of Chutzpah

March 17, 2019

As back-to-back holidays go, Purim and Passover could not be more different. Purim is a day of antics and feasting, while on Passover we use matzah and salt water to transport ourselves back to the days of slavery. Despite their differences, these holidays are both redemption stories of the Jewish people, relaying a narrative of suffering and rescue, and each involves a ton of chutzpah.

Breathing as One: Shabbat as a Common Language

Tending to Our Roots: Tu B’Shvat in a Time of Global Warming

Tending to Our Roots: Tu B’Shvat in a Time of Global Warming

January 20, 2019

My favorite holiday tends to shift given whichever one is closest, but I find myself prioritizing Tu B’Shvat year-round. I only learned about it and celebrated for the first time last year, during my year-long study to convert to Judaism, and I was struck by the beauty of having a whole holiday dedicated to trees.... Being Enough

November 18, 2018

Chanukah is a time when we display our Judaism as a proud badge of honor — we light our menorahs by our windows and come together as a community to celebrate a shared history and a shared identity. While we are all proud of our shared Jewish identity, we also would like to take this... Read more »
