Artist Stephanie Caplan grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and currently lives in the East Village of New York. She draws on the energy of the city, as well as her academic background in Judaism and art history, to create ketubahs that combine art and ritual in new and surprising ways. The Beloved Ketubah is a magnificent example of modern Hebrew calligraphy, directing the focus on the words themselves and allowing the text to take center stage. The phrase “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine" is rendered in rich watercolor, the Hebrew and English letters layering and overlapping to form an arresting and beautiful motif, while the text of the ketubah extends below in a column of graceful hand lettering. Caplan uses white space to beautiful effect, allowing the text to breathe and bringing a modern minimalism to the piece.
